Three neighborhoods — the plant-lined Central Park, the indoor Royal Promenade and the Suite Neighborhood — are returning from the line's last series of giant ships, the five-vessel Oasis Class. While the first sailing of Icon of the Seas with paying passengers is an Eastern Caribbean itinerary, the vessel will operate voyages to the Western Caribbean, too. A multiperson team from TPG will also be reporting live from a three-night Icon of the Seas preview sailing for media and travel agents scheduled for Jan. 20. Mardi Gras was a huge hit for Carnival Cruise Line in 2021, leading the cruise line to build sister ships Carnival Celebration in 2022 and Carnival Jubilee in 2023.

Royal Caribbean bills the older Wonder of the Seas as the “biggest ship in the world.” When the new one is ready, it will be 10 feet longer, heavier and will carry more people, perhaps giving it bragging rights as the world’s largest. Even so, according to our list of ships ranked by size per passenger, Icon of the Seas will still have a roomy space ratio of 44.7. That ranks it near the top of our list, proving that more people doesn’t always mean more cramped on today’s mega-ships. Liquefied natural gas, meanwhile, is a controversial energy source that involves cooling natural gas to a liquid state to make it easier to transport. As for its onboard offerings, MSC Cruises is taking a page from Royal Caribbean's playbook by breaking down the public areas of MSC World Europa into districts. They will include an adults-only "Zen district" and a separate "family district" that houses as many as 10 new kids facilities. There also will be a central interior promenade with entertainment, shops and bars. MSC World Europa will be 21 decks high — three decks higher than the Oasis Class ships.

Europe-based Costa Cruises and Aida Cruises also have unveiled massive new ships since 2018 that rank among the 10 biggest cruise ships ever built -- Costa Smeralda and AIDAnova. We aren't including them here as they primarily are aimed at a European crowd. AIDAnova, in particular, is designed just for the German-speaking market.
The company saw the largest booking day in its history when reservations for the Icon opened in October 2022, leading Michael Bayley, the cruise line's CEO, to call it "the best-selling product in the history of our business." Royal Caribbean and Meyer Turku shipyard began construction on the Star of the Seas in February 2023 just four months after the cruise line unveiled details of the Icon of the Seas. Specifics about the Star aren't public yet — this new vessel won't set sail until the summer of 2025.

Already, one of the vessels -- MSC Grandiosa -- is sailing again in the Mediterranean, albeit on cruises that only are open to residents of Europe's Schengen countries. At this size, the vessel surpasses any previous Oasis class ship once built to be the world's largest, setting a strong precident for the upcoming Icon Class. In June 2023, the ship hit a major milestone when it completed its first sea trials outside the shipyard in Turku, Finland.

That’s certainly been the mantra for Miami based cruise line Royal Caribbean, who just announced their largest ship Icon of the Seas will officially enter service in 2024. At maximum capacity, Icon will be capable of hosting 7,600 passengers on its inaugural sail on January 28, 2024.
The last time that happened was in 2009 when Royal Caribbean unveiled its much-ballyhooed Oasis Class of vessels. Instead, Carnival Cruise Line focused on building medium-sized vessels with very little differentiation between ship classes. The result was a fleet that lacked overall innovation and technological advancement, especially in comparison to leading competitors of Royal Caribbean and Norwegian Cruise Line.
Next up is the colossal new ship’s first voyage, slated to depart on January 27, 2024. It will sail roundtrip from Miami to the Caribbean islands of St. Kitts, St. Thomas, and the Bahamas. In July — only six months after Icon's debut — the upcoming mega-ship will join its fleet with a series of three- to four-night cruises from Florida's Port Canaveral, Royal Caribbean says. With progress on Icon of the Seas moving along, Royal Caribbean has already started building another large “icon class” ship. The cruise line expects that unnamed vessel to launch in 2025, per a statement. The cruise line is positioning the vessel as “the ultimate family vacation,” as CEO Michael Bayley told reporters earlier this year, per CNN’s Maureen O’Hare.
If you want to sail aboard Icon of the Seas, bookings have seen record demand according to the cruise line. Given the excitement about its arrival and all the new amenities, sailings are considerably more expensive than on other ships in the fleet. We found them to be an average of $850 more per person for the lowest-priced interior cabin aboard Wonder of the Seas, the current newest ship in the fleet. Norwegian Encore is a slightly bigger version of three other Breakaway-Plus class ships that Norwegian has unveiled since 2015 (thanks to a small addition at its back to make room for the laser tag area).

Utopia is set to be 10 feet stubbier, two decks shorter, and 13,940 gross-tons lighter. More specifically, Icon of the Seas measures 1,198 feet long—nearly a quarter of a mile—and has a gross tonnage of 250,800. All that space means it can accommodate 5,600 guests and 2,350 crew members.
